Molluscum treatment

This viral disease of the skin is characterized by umbilicated papules. The lesions are often on the limbs (especially axillae) and occasionally on the mucous membranes of the lips, tongue and pubic mouth areas pubic. Genital and perineal areas may be affected.

What is molluscum?

These are small benign growths that resemble warts. Viral, these small "buttons" are safe. The infection primarily affects children and rarely adults. The buttons of molluscum normally does not itch. However, in cases of mild itching, the child must not scratch.

How do dermatologists treat molluscum?

The most effective treatment is probably scraping the molluscum with a curette, but this procedure is somewhat painful and it often requires a local anesthesia with the aid of an applied cream one hour before. Freezing mollusca with liquid nitrogen is also a method often used. Several treatment sessions spaced 3 to 6 weeks are often necessary because of the appearance of new lesions. Other methods, such as delicate electrocoagulation, laser, local application of cream containing retinoid or substances such as cantharidin, but more rarely. We may consider not treating molluscum until their spontaneous death, particularly among young children where the molluscum are very numerous.

Several therapeutic strategies are being evaluated. A cream containing imiquimod modulates the body's defenses and it is in the treatment of genital warts. A cream containing an antiviral substance (cidofovir) is also being tested. Molluscum is a benign but contagious infection of the skin. The molluscum can ignite, turn red, and it often announces imminent disappearance. Here is a homeopathic treatment to accelerate the healing process: silver nitrate used by dermatology but infinitesimal dilution.

What treatments exists for molluscum contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is a benign condition which, if untreated, will disappear of itself, but when molluscum disappears, another contamination of the surrounding skin appears. From six months to five years may elapse before the complete disappearance of molluscum contagiosum. In our opinion, it is preferable to treat molluscum. For this purpose, several methods are possible. The most effective methods is the scraping of molluscum contagiosum with a curette. It will nevertheless treat molluscum first with an anesthetic cream because the technique is not without pain. A second method is freezing the mollusca with liquid nitrogen. Other methods are rarely recommended.
