Genital molluscum

Molluscum contagiosum is an eruption of epidermal tumors presenting as small umbilicated papules due to a viral and benign skin infection. Epidemiology: common, affects both sexes equally, the transmission is interhuman by close contact with infected people or frequent self-inoculation, especially in children by scratching. Preferentially reached the face, trunk and limbs in children, the groin and genitalia in adults.

Risk factors for genital molluscum are:

  • Favoring circumstances : public baths, swimming pools, gyms, occupations with frequent skin contact
  • Role of cellular immunity in the control and regression of the infection by MCV
  • Sexually transmitted disease in young adults
  • Opportunistic viral disease most common in AIDS

How do I prevent the spread of molluscum?

Abstinence or condoms when are used properly can help prevent transmission of infection from one person to another only if the lesions are located on the penis. The problem is that the lesions are rarely confined to the genital area and this disease is not necessarily sexually transmitted. Therefore, direct contact with any infected person can cause infection. Our usual advice is: wherever possible, avoid direct skin contact until all lesions are treated and eliminated. To this end, wearing clothes that cover all infected areas can be useful!

What is the best genital molluscum treatment?

For many people, the infection can disappear without treatment. Your doctor may use certain products to remove the buttons. Sometimes the buttons can be removed by surgery. However, even after their removal, the infection can recur and it may be that you need to repeat the treatment.

What about sexual partners?

It is recommended that sexual partners and others who have had direct contact with the molluscum contagiosum should be advised of the situation and to consider and address if they have symptoms.
